On Optimal Heuristic Randomized Semidecision Procedures, with Application to Proof Complexity

چکیده
The existence of a (p-)optimal propositional proof system is a major open question in (proof) complexity; many people conjecture that such systems do not exist. Kraj́ıček and Pudlák [KP89] show that this question is equivalent to the existence of an algorithm that is optimal on all propositional tautologies. Monroe [Mon09] recently gave a conjecture implying that such algorithm does not exist. We show that in the presence of errors such optimal algorithms do exist. The concept is motivated by the notion of heuristic algorithms. Namely, we allow the algorithm to claim a small number of false “theorems” (according to any polynomial-time samplable distribution on non-tautologies) and err with bounded probability on other inputs. Our result can also be viewed as the existence of an optimal proof system in a class of proof systems obtained by generalizing automatizable proof systems.

متن کاملCompletion Procedures as Semidecision Procedures
In this paper we give a new abstract framework for the study of Knuth-Bendix type completion procedures, which are regarded as semidecision procedures for theorem proving. First, we extend the classical proof ordering approach started in [6] in such a way that proofs of different theorems can also be compared. This is necessary for the application of proof orderings to theorem proving derivatio...
متن کاملMinimizing Makespan with Start Time Dependent Jobs in a Two Machine Flow Shop
[if gte mso 9]> The purpose of this paper is to consider the problem of scheduling a set of start time-dependent jobs in a two-machine flow shop, in which the actual processing times of jobs increase linearly according to their starting time. The objective of this problem is to minimize the makespan. The problem is known to be NP-hardness[ah1] ; therefore, there is no polynomial-time algorithm...
متن کاملTowards a Foundation of Completion Procedures as Semidecision Procedures
Completion procedures, originated from the seminal work of Knuth and Bendix, are wellknown as procedures for generating confluent rewrite systems, i.e. decision procedures for equational theories. In this paper we present a new abstract framework for the utilization of completion procedures as semidecision procedures for theorem proving. The key idea in our approach is that a semidecision proce...
متن کاملA novel heuristic algorithm for capacitated vehicle routing problem
The vehicle routing problem with the capacity constraints was considered in this paper. It is quite difficult to achieve an optimal solution with traditional optimization methods by reason of the high computational complexity for large-scale problems. Consequently, new heuristic or metaheuristic approaches have been developed to solve this problem. In this paper, we constructed a new heuristic ...
